Dear Karen, Today I am joining more than 400 Quakers and friends on Capitol Hill. We will be meeting with our legislators and their staff, urging them to act for peace by repealing the 2002 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) – the law that authorized the U.S. invasion of Iraq. I need your help to drive home our message. Will you send a letter to Rep. Budzinski and Sens. Durbin and Duckworth now?
We are at a critical moment. Congressional leaders are in final negotiations on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The House passed a version of this legislation that includes repeal of the 2002 Iraq AUMF, but it is not in the bill the Senate passed. Now negotiators from both chambers are meeting to resolve their differences. We hope every member of Congress will voice their support for keeping the repeal of the 2002 Iraq AUMF in the final NDAA. Passing this legislation will be an important first step by Congress in reasserting its constitutional authority over when the United States goes to war. Amid the gridlock and partisanship on Capitol Hill, with your help, we believe we can win this.
P.S. Want to strengthen your message? Consider following up your letter with a Tweet to your members of Congress:
