Dear Noah,

Last night, President Trump declared himself to be “an ally of all peaceful protestors.” He then threatened to deploy the military to states experiencing mass protest. Moments later, those assembled outside the White House were tear-gassed to clear space for a presidential photo-op beside Saint John’s Church.

We are devastated by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and uncounted numbers of African Americans killed daily by the deadly consequences of racism and police violence. We reject the president’s call for a military occupation of our streets to suppress legitimate protests guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

Today, we join the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and more than 400 organizations in calling on Congress to swiftly pass meaningful police reform legislation. I urge you to join us in calling on Congress to act.

As we stand with protesters calling for radical social change, we affirm that Black lives matter. Those of us who are white must confront racism in ourselves and in the institutions we care about—our faith communities, schools, neighborhoods, families, and Congress. In so doing we take action in aiding our Black brothers and sisters yearning to breathe and live free.

Diane Randall

Sincerely,

Diane Randall

General Secretary
