Dear Friend, In what feels like a recurring nightmare, our nation is once again reeling from a horrific mass shooting. Ten years after Sandy Hook, and just days after mass shootings in Buffalo, NY and Laguna Woods, CA, 19 children and two teachers were killed in Uvalde, TX last week. This indescribable tragedy—compounded by lawmakers’ failure to act—is enough to make us feel hopeless. But Friend, we must resist the urge to sink into despair. High-level, bipartisan negotiations are taking place over gun violence prevention legislation, and there’s growing interest in extreme risk protection orders (ERPOs).
The proposed legislation, which could move quickly, would provide states with funding to implement ERPOs. ERPOs can remove guns from people who are a threat to themselves or others. This will not solve the epidemic of gun violence. But after years of stagnancy, it would represent a strong step forward. Contact Congress today and tell them to pass legislation funding Extreme Risk Protection Orders..
